bye bye ba ba

Hola is 14 months old today.

We are celebrating this lovely occasion by ridding him of his bottles!

No, I don’t mean to sound so cruel, but the boy is a wonder with his water sippies and I just can’t continue t0 wash his bottles (BY HAND) with all 743 pieces. I tried the ‘ol switcheroo when he turned 1 yr old. It really wasn’t a horrible day, he just didn’t take to the change easily, so I thought I would put my (desperate) desires away and try again at 14 months.

I went through the same routine with Rt. I tried at 12, 14 and then 16 months before I just gave him sippies and that was all I was going to offer. But Rt wasn’t a whiz at the sippy like Hola is now. He actually didn’t know how to use them for quite sometime. Due to his issues, I started him on the straw kind and he was a super-sipper. (Don’t EVER put milk into a straw sippy. The milk gets trapped in there and there is nothing worse than stale milk. NOTHING.) So, we had to wait till Rt was comfortable enough with the regular sippy before the transfer took. At. sixteen. months.

Hola decided his day would begin at 5:30am this morning. I find it truly difficult to complain when the kid sleeps all night, every night, but the day starting that early did through off my original plan of NO BOTTLES FOR YOU BABY. I decided since it was the crack-ass of dawn, I would go ahead with one bottle. (It was hubs morning to sleep in and I needed a happy, QUIET baby and you don’t get a happy, QUIET baby when they are cranky and Hungry and stubborn.)

Hola still takes one of his servings of milk right after his morning nap. He can’t quite make it till lunch and I don’t have enough food to suffice his appetite with a snack, so he still gets milk here. Today, I put it in a Nuby sippy (good flow, TOO messy) and away we went. He drank most of it before we left for the gym and finished the rest once we got back in the car.

I would say that, so far, this is a great success (even though both of us were covered from head to toe with milk) BUT, I am wondering how the rest of the day will go. I can imagine the next “feed” will go over better than the sippy right before bed. He takes 7 oz. at that time and loves to chug-a-lug.

Time will tell.

Hopefully, I can sterilize those damn (fabulous) Dr. Brown bottles in the next few days and drop them off at the local Goodwill. I am SO ready to have my counter-tops BACK.

Wish us luck!

p.s. I am not partial to any particular brands of sippies. Anyone have any suggestions on brands they love? Transitioned easily with?

  1. I personally found that once they’re ready for the sippy, they can drink from whichever kind you have lying around. I use the Playtex ones because I think they leak less than others… and my daughter is quite fond of THROWING her cup on the floor. Which drives me crazy, but the Playtex ones keep it contained far better than the Nubys.

  2. I won’t tell you how many brands of sippy’s we have, but the truth is Apple drinks from a glass. It irritates me to no end, but she does it. Little glasses of milk, juice, water. I do carry a sippy around so that if she is really thirsty she will have something but, she rarely takes it.

  3. Nubys leak like crazy. Gerber’s are nice, but…the valve is hard plastic. Which means if you bang the cup really hard on the floor over & over & over it will come out, and then you can shake the cup a lot so the juice splashes all over the floor. So they’re better for bigger kids who don’t really need a sippy but want to sip on something all day. I like Playtex the best. The valve is soft plastic so it stays in plays even when repeatedly banged on the floor.

  4. Kleen Kanteen’s are the best! You can buy sippy tops and then later on, switch to regular tops. Love, love them!
